This month we’re featuring several postings related to AI and New Product Development by guest contributor Robert Cooper (Creator of the Stage-Gate® System)
In kHUB’s new “Quick Takes” video format, Bob Cooperpresents From Fuzzy to Focused: How AI
Transforms the Front-End of Product Development. He describes how AI tools can be used from idea generation through business case generation, including concept development, technical assessment, and competitive analysis. He builds the case with examples and data on how AI is positioned well for the front end of New Product Development as an Originator Function and a Facilitating Function. Watch the video and access his slides in kHUB’s Product Innovation Process section here.
Dr. Cooper has also written an article on the same subject: For Successful and Accelerated AI Adoption and Results, Focus on Front End of New Product Development. Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its mark in new product development (NPD). Leading firms such as Siemens, GE, GM, BASF, and Nestlé have already reported significant gains: faster development cycles, stronger product designs, and more effective innovation. Yet these early adopters—with their large IT departments and deep pockets—are not representative of most companies. For the majority, AI adoption in NPD remains a challenge.
AI is often hailed as a game-changer for new product development (NPD), promising dramatic efficiency gains, faster time-to-market, and superior product outcomes. Yet, behind the headlines, adoption tells a different story. While early adopters—mostly large firms with substantial budgets and large IT departments—report transformative results, most organizations are still moving slowly. Dr. Cooper shares data and strategies to address the AI Paradox in his article “A Strategy for Adopting AI in NPD”. The content from “A Strategy for Adopting AI in NPD” is also now posted as a Quick Takes video.
We continue to update the highlighted content on kHUB’s landing page. We’ve added a feature to highlight new, relevant, interesting content. This week we’ve shared another article by Dr. Cooper:What Is AI and What Can It Do in NPD for You and Your Business? Many senior management teams seem uncertain about the ultimate role of AI in their business, its potential impact, and whether they should move forward at full speed, or just put their toe in the AI water. Similarly, many people working within NPD—ordinary employees and line managers—are also somewhat
confused: They wonder what the role of AI will be, its impact on their jobs, and in some cases, why the company has not moved faster to adopt some of the more obvious AI applications in product innovation. Bob explains AI, its value to NPD, and stresses the urgency to incorporate it into your business now, in order to gain an edge and not be left behind by others in your
industry.
