The PDMA Handbook of New Product Development (4th edition)
Call for Proposals
|
|
|
Editors: Ludwig Bstieler and Charles Noble
|
|
|
The Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) is delighted to announce the launch of the 4th edition of the popular Handbook of New Product Development published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This series has proven to be an essential guide for managers and scholars interested in the latest insights on successful new product development and related topics. As with prior editions in the series, we seek contributions from skilled practitioners and leading scholars who can advance this topic and also provide a primer for those new to the field.
As currently envisioned, the book will include contributions from a range of authors, organized around six major topics:
- Getting Started — New Product Development and Innovation
- Organizing for New Product Development
- Idea Generation and Opportunity Identification
- Idea Screening/Analysis
- Design Issues
- New Product Launch
The editors of the Handbook (Ludwig Bstieler and Charles Noble) seek proposals for chapters to be included in this new edition. The target audience for this book is both experienced new product development (NPD) practitioners who are grounded in the basics of new product development and are seeking new, practical knowledge to improve their NPD processes, and also academic researchers interested in a broad coverage of the area with deep dives into emerging, impactful topics.
The book chapters will likely take different forms, including thorough descriptions of an emerging tool or technique, rigorous research studies that are readable by a wide audience, and/or reflections on the evolution of practice in various areas. The Handbook is envisioned as approximately 30 chapters of approximately 15-20 pages each in final print form. This equates to roughly 20-30 pages (inclusive) in double-spaced, manuscript form per chapter. Each chapter should be built on a rigorous foundation of research and/or experience with value for all readers.
While we are open to any submissions on this general topic, suggested topics (chapters) for the book include:
- Factors driving successful new products
- Frameworks for innovation management
- Aligning business and product innovation strategy
- Creating breakthrough (radical) innovation
- Sustainable/responsible new product development and innovation
- Success factors for new product development in emerging markets
- Leading new product development teams
- Influence of customer needs on product development
- New product concept generation and testing
- Market sizing and market analytics
- Forecasting new products
- Design and design thinking
- Gamification of idea generation and innovation contests
- User innovation and co-creation
- Developing a value proposition for new products
- New service development issues
- Open innovation
- Digitalization
- Influences of artificial intelligence, big data, etc., on new product development
- Portfolio management
- Business model innovation
- Effective practices in the front-end of innovation
- Creativity and ideation
- Product platform development
- Influence of the “maker movement”: 3-D printing and digital manufacturing
- Standardization versus customization in NPD
- Launching new products
- Post-launch management of new products
- Influence of supply chain on NPD
- Improving new product development governance
- Legal issues in new product development
Proposals should be no longer than 2 pages (single-spaced), not including supplemental material, and should include:
- 1 paragraph definition of the objective and target audience for the chapter
- 1-2 paragraph description of the intended contribution
- an outline for the chapter that covers its basic content
- any central figures or other graphics which will be the focus of your chapter
The projected Handbook timeline is:
2021
November 15: Call for proposals announced
2022
January 3: Chapter proposals due
January 17: Decisions and feedback to authors
April 15: Full chapters due
May 15: Feedback to authors
June 30: Revisions due back to editors
July 15: Feedback to authors on revisions
August 5: Final changes due
Fall 2022: Publication
*Please note that this is a fairly aggressive time schedule, so there will be little flexibility with due dates because of the committed publication date.
As with all PDMA activities and previous editions of this book, the PDMA Handbook of New Product Development will adhere to the association’s non-commercial policies, including the lack of financial compensation to authors. The authors’ professional affiliations are included in the chapter byline, but the chapter should not present any proprietary methods or techniques.
For additional information or to purchase prior editions of the Handbook, see the PDMA website: www.pdma.org.
Authors should submit proposals via email to Charles Noble at: cnoble@utk.edu.
