PDMA Board of Directors Strategic Planning Session: Key Outcomes and Goals
|
|
|
The PDMA Board of Directors recently held a strategic planning session at the PDMA headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The meeting brought several decisions aimed at enhancing PDMA’s relevance and services, and expanding our reach. Here are the primary long-range goals and outcomes from the session:
1. Expansion of the New Product Development Professional (NPDP) Certification Program: - Online Learning Transition: Recognizing the increasing demand for flexible learning options, we will investigate and work toward an online format to augment in-person training opportunities. This transition will provide greater accessibility and convenience for professionals worldwide seeking certification.
- External Accreditation: To further enhance the credibility and recognition of the NPDP Certification, we will investigate outside accreditation of the program. This will ensure that our certification meets the highest standards and is recognized globally as a mark of excellence in product development.
- Further Product Development: Recognizing the diversity of training and education needs of corporations, schools, and individuals we will work toward packaging solutions that meet each of their unique needs and align with their goals.
2. PDMA Global Chapter Development: - Global Reach: We are committed to fostering a more interconnected and global community. We will work to support and develop PDMA chapters around the world. This initiative aims to bring together diverse professionals and facilitate the sharing of
knowledge and best practices across borders as we continue to increase the number of PDMA Chapters worldwide.
3. Technology Platform Evaluation and Upgrades: - Modernization Efforts: A thorough evaluation of our current technology platforms will be conducted, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement. Upgrading these platforms will enhance user experience, streamline operations, and ensure
that PDMA remains at the forefront of technological advancements amongst professional associations.
4. Enhancement of PDMA Governance Practices: - Volunteer Recruitment: To strengthen our community and expand our impact, we will implement strategies to recruit more volunteers. These efforts will focus on attracting individuals who are passionate about product development and eager to
contribute their expertise to PDMA’s initiatives.
- Leadership Development: We recognize the importance of nurturing future leaders within our organization. We will establish programs to develop leadership skills among our volunteer leaders, ensuring a strong and capable leadership pipeline.
- Succession Planning: Effective succession planning is crucial for the sustainability of our organization. We will create comprehensive plans to ensure smooth transitions in leadership roles, maintaining continuity and stability within PDMA.
5. Assessing PDMA’s Relevance to the Product Community: - Surveys and Voice of Customer Research: To stay attuned to the needs and expectations of our community, we will conduct surveys and voice of customer research. This feedback will be crucial in shaping our strategic initiatives and
ensuring we provide the most relevant and valuable services.
- Long-term Considerations: Insights from these assessments will inform longer-term strategic decisions, including branding of the organization. By staying connected to the evolving needs of the product community, we aim to maintain our position as a leading association in product development and management.
These strategic initiatives underscore our commitment to continuous improvement and global leadership in product development and management. We look forward to the positive impact these changes will have on our members and the broader professional community.
Stay tuned for more updates as we implement these exciting developments!

- kHUB curator Rose Klimovich has been reviewing the new V3.0 of PDMA’s BoK. She submitted an article posted to our Culture & Teams section with insights regarding team motivation: Product Team Motivation: How to get a product innovation team past the storming stage. The article explores essential strategies for product managers to navigate and motivate product innovation teams through the storming stage of team development. Drawing on Bruce Tuckman's model, it outlines the phases teams typically go through: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Emphasizing the significance of moving past the storming phase, the article offers insights into acknowledging team problems and addressing conflicts constructively. It suggests utilizing tools like the Thomas Kilmann Model to facilitate conflict resolution, emphasizing collaboration, and establishing clear goals and roles to foster team cohesion and
productivity. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of understanding individual motivations and creating a positive work environment conducive to innovation. Overall, the article provides practical advice for product managers to effectively lead their teams through challenges and towards successful product innovation.
