Leading Firms Invest More in NPD During the Pandemic
The first results from the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) Best Practices Survey (BPS) are now ready. This key resource provides insights for successful innovation and new product development improvement. We will release core findings in the coming months. The BPS analysis identifies the firms as "leading" if they are among the best third in their industry, have the highest ratings on NPD performance, and are most successful at commercializing their new products. For over a year now, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on how companies operate. For many firms, the reaction is to reduce efforts in new product development and innovation to make resources available for revenue-critical functions such as marketing and sales. What do the results of the PDMA BPS show? Our analysis of 650 firms worldwide highlights that during the pandemic,
The leading firms hired almost 25% more people into new product development in 2020 compared to 2019, while the rest kept the number of people in NPD constant;
The leading firms invested more than 20% more in new product development in 2020 compared to 2019. The rest reduced their NPD investments by 4%.
Within the NPD portfolio, the leading firms have initiated several changes. They have slowed down or even stopped more projects than the other firms during the pandemic, while – at the same time – they have also started and accelerated more NPD projects. In short, the leading firms have been more active in re-focusing their portfolio as a response to the sudden disruption to both supply and demand caused by the pandemic.
Stay tuned for more take-aways from the survey coming up in this newsletter. If you want to know more about the survey and results, contact us at eewald@pdma.org.

Recently Ahmed Ragab shared his insights on Product Innovation Management (Chapter 7) with “The Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for Product Innovation are mainly Non-Product things!” and Carlos Rodriguez shared his insights on Product Design and Development Tools (Chapter 4) with “The Creative Process: Ideation and Divergence Methods”.kHUB is also a link to PDMA’s Academic Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM).Read all about how Innovation in a digital world increasingly revolves around open platforms that consist of a coretechnology and a large variety of complementary products developed by an ecosystem of independent complementors. A recent JPIM article (Sustaining Complement Quality for Digital Product Platforms: A Case Study of the Philips Hue Ecosystem) explores this theme and can be accessed via kHUB.
